A whole-house dehumidifier is installed in the ductwork alongside the air conditioner. It draws air from the return side, pulls it across a cold coil where water condenses out, and sends drier air back into the supply ducts, so every room gets treated air. The condensed water leaves through a drain line to a floor drain or a condensate pump. Because it handles moisture separately, the air conditioner can cool without being forced into long cycles just to dry the house.
The first visit is a measurement. You cannot judge humidity by feel, so get a small digital hygrometer and put one in a main living area and one in the basement or lowest floor. Indoor humidity held under about sixty percent discourages mold and dust mites, and many people are most comfortable in the forties and fifties. Watch the reading through a July week. If it holds steady while the air conditioner runs, the system is doing its job. If it climbs, call for a look.
Care is light, but it is not zero. Keep the filter clean so airflow across the coil is not restricted, keep the condensate drain clear so water does not back up, and keep the area around any portable or crawl space unit free of clutter.
