It needs three connections: a small water line, a drain for the excess, and a control wire to a humidistat so it runs only when humidity is low and the furnace is heating. In a common design, warm air from the furnace is routed through a water-fed pad or panel, picks up moisture, and carries it into the house through the same ducts that heat it.

How to keep it clean and set correctly
Water leaves minerals behind, and a humidifier is where they collect. The pad or water panel scales up over a heating season and should be replaced each year, and the water supply, drain and valve should be checked for buildup. A clogged pad stops evaporating and the unit runs without adding a drop. At the end of the heating season, close the water supply and set the bypass damper as your technician shows you, then reopen it in the fall.
Setting matters as much as cleaning. Too much humidity in winter fogs the windows and can push moisture into places it does not belong, so the humidistat setting should come down as outdoor temperatures drop.
