Chapter 01
How the ground heats and cools a house
A few feet below the surface, the ground holds a nearly steady temperature all year, while the air above it swings from freezing to over a hundred degrees. A geothermal heat pump, also called a ground-source heat pump, takes advantage of that steadiness. Instead of pulling heat out of cold winter air or dumping it into hot summer air, it exchanges heat with the earth. The ground loop is the part that makes this possible. It is a network of buried pipe filled with a water and antifreeze solution that circulates between the earth and the heat pump inside the house. What a geothermal system needs from its owner
Very little, but it needs it regularly. The air filter should be changed on the schedule your technician gives you, because a dirty filter makes the heat pump work harder.
