Chapter 01
Where a mini-split solves a problem ducts cannot
A ducted system is only as good as its ducts. When a room sits at the far end of a long run, or an addition was built after the trunk line was laid, the air that reaches it is weak and the room never matches the rest of the house. A garage conversion, a sunroom, a finished attic and an older home with no ductwork at all are the usual candidates. A mini-split skips the duct run and puts conditioned air straight into the room.
The equipment is simple to picture. An outdoor unit holds the compressor and condenser coil, and a refrigerant line set runs through the wall to one or more indoor heads. In a multi-zone setup, one outdoor unit feeds several heads, each with its own remote and its own temperature setting. How we mount, pipe and commission a ductless system
Every job starts with an in-home assessment. The technician looks at the room, the wall the head will hang on, and the spot where the outdoor unit can sit on a level pad with clear airflow around it. That visit settles how many indoor heads the house needs and where each one goes. On a maintenance or repair call, the same visit covers the equipment already on your wall, and the quote is written from what the technician actually finds.
Installation follows a set order. The indoor head goes on the wall with room to breathe above and beside it, and a small hole is cored through the wall for the line set, the condensate drain and the control wire. The copper lines are cut, flared or brazed, and insulated. Before any refrigerant is released, the lines are pressure tested and pulled down under vacuum to remove air and moisture, because either one left inside shortens the life of the compressor.
Commissioning is the part that is easy to rush and should not be. The technician opens the service valves, checks the refrigerant charge against the manufacturer's data, and confirms the condensate drains away from the wall rather than into it. Chapter 03
How to keep a mini-split clean and efficient
A mini-split has no ductwork to hide its dirt, so it shows up on the unit itself. The washable filter behind the front panel loads with dust and pet hair, and a clogged filter cuts airflow and lets dust reach the coil and the blower wheel behind it. Pull the filters every month or so through the cooling and heating seasons, rinse them, let them dry and put them back. It takes a few minutes and it is the most useful thing an owner can do.
The parts a homeowner should not reach are the ones a technician cleans on a maintenance visit. The indoor coil and blower wheel collect a film that causes musty smells and weak airflow. The condensate drain can clog and drip down the wall. The outdoor unit needs leaves, grass clippings and weeds kept clear of its coil.
